The Black Catholic Flourishing Initiative

In August 2023, FADICA-Catholic Philanthropy Network and its Ad hoc Committee on Anti-Racism commissioned a report titled, And the Walls Came Tumbling Down: A Report on U.S. Black Catholic Dreams Toward a Just Church authored by David Robinson-Morris, Ph.D., The REImaginelution.

The report provided a thematic analysis of the listening sessions and recommendations for FADICA to implement to both enhance the Church’s work toward anti-racism and justice, and  explore how it might support Black Catholic flourishing within the American Church.

The report also recommended a contemporaneous undertaking in the form of the “Black Catholic Flourishing” Initiative, which is altogether a different undertaking than FADICA’s anti-racism work.

Let by The Center for the Human Spirit and Radical Reimagining and supported by a grant from FADICA, The 12 conversations partners of the Black Catholic Flourishing Initiative will gather data and dialogue with Black Catholic organizations, congregations, and individuals to assist them in determining the mental, economic, and spiritual models that might be in need of transformation within Black Catholic communities across the country.

An Ongoing Practice of Sankofa-in-Action

It is important to note that the Black Catholic flourishing work is an on-going undertaking; there is no point of completion. This endeavor, going back and fetching the goodness of the work that has already been done, seeks to develop a generative framework and shore up a more firm foundation for this necessary work to continue with, for, and among the Black Catholic community-at-large into an unforeseeable future.
